COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS)
WHA would like to remind everyone to stay calm and accurately informed about the current situation regarding the “Coronavirus” (COVID-19. Here are a few things to remember (there are several links throughout this page to useful information):
- COVID-19 is named for a type of virus, a “coronavirus.” Coronaviruses are a family of very common viruses that are well known for causing upper respiratory tract infections, often during the winter months. These viruses can cause infections, that can be severe and cause epidemic spreads. These viruses cause flu-like illnesses along with exacerbations (worsening) of bronchitis and pneumonia. the COVID-19 is a specific type of coronavirus that was identified in China in November 2019.
- These viruses spread through respiratory secretions (laughing, sneezing, coughing, talking, touching your mouth and then something else, etc). These infected secretions get inhaled or make contact with mucous membranes (lips, eyes, airway, mouth, etc) and cause the infection.
- The best prevention for contracting and spreading the virus is by frequently washing your hands and practicing cough hygiene.
- If you are experiencing any sign/symptom of a respiratory illness (cough, fever, cold and flu like symptoms):
- If you need emergency care, please dial 9-1-1 or go to your nearest emergency department.
- Follow the CDC’s current recommendations on home care and when to seek medical care.
We cannot reiterate enough, the importance of staying calm as well as washing your hands.
